West Highland Terrier Breed Review by Linda Todd

I owned two - both males! Awesome dogs :) I miss them both terribly. My first was Buttons. He was just amazing :) He passed a little over 10 years ago. My most recent Westie was Champ. He passed about 2 weeks ago. I miss him so very, very much :( These dogs are great. They have a fabulous personality and are trained fairly easy. I used to groom mine every 6-8 weeks. The breed is great with kids and they are perfect for people with allergies. They hardly shed :)

One of the best, if not the best dog I have ever had. A big dog in a small package. Loving, athletic, loyal, and tough.

I have had 2 westies in the past 30 years, they are fun loving little guys. Both were males, very easy to train, never messed in the house, i always allowed them to run the house when i wasn\'t home and never had a surprise when i got back. They are great with kids, and with other animals, mine being a cat. I very soon, will be getting another male pup, that is why i\'m actually on this site. They are by far, my favorite dog.

The West Highland Terrier is a breed of dog originating in Poltalloch, Scotland. Commonly called the “Westie”, they were first called the Poltalloch Terrier. They were bred to control the population of small animals such as rats, foxes, and badgers. Originally this pup had a red coat, but they were then bred to be white so as not to be confused with the red foxes when hunting. Key features of the West Highland Terrier is their white coat and bullet shaped body that helps them squeeze out of small spaces. Their tails were also bred to be extra strong so that they could be pulled from tight spaces if they became stuck while hunting and digging. It won’t hurt them. They have a soft, thick undercoat with a coarse outer coat. Grooming includes daily brushing, regular clipping every few months, and stripping of their coat twice a year. They are great travel dogs due to their compact size. The Westie is easy to train, friendly toward strangers, and good with children, making them a great family pet! The West Highland Terrier was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1908.
