Shetland Sheepdog Breed Review by Mary Beth

I have had shelties my entire life. Got my first one when I was just a little girl. I have had 6 in total. They are very loyal, affectionate, sensitive and above all noisy. They are very vocal. Best dogs I have ever had. Great with children also. They do need some exercise too.

By far one one of the most gentle smart breeds there are, beware the do not respond well to harsh treatment they actually can get hurt feelings then you need to have a make up session. Truly loyal and loving.

An accurate picture of a Sheltie; in my experience, a normal, average Sheltie weighs 14-20 lbs.

Shetland Sheepdog Breed Review by Crystal Gemberling

I have owned Shetland Sheepdogs for 8yrs.now,one of our two just passed away two weeks ago & we miss her & always will but we are ready for another new baby to love again like we did our Miss.Daisy Mae...Lucky(our 6yr.old Tri-color)is lonely & misses Daisy but he would love another new sister in a new way. Shelties are a great dog, loving, gentle, very smart...a great family dog & loves to be loved, anyone who owns one would agree,my sister has our Daisy Mae\'s brother & my brother has three Shelties as well.

Just lost my 9 year old Sheltie, Kerry suddenly, to aggressive cancer. I am heartbroken because she was my baby. Shelties are the smartest, sweetest dogs ever.

The Shetland Sheepdog, most commonly known as the Sheltie, is one of the most obedient breeds. Very alert and highly trainable, this breed has been trained for many tasks including protectors, watchdogs, herders, trackers, and performers. Their origin dates back to the Border Collie in Scotland. They were taken to the Shetland Islands and bred with intelligent, smaller, long-haired dogs. Calm, firm training is best, as they react to the tone of your voice. Socialize them at an early age because their guarding instincts can make them suspicious of strangers. The Sheltie is an active dog and needs lots of exercise. As for grooming, regular brushing is required. Their coat naturally removes dirt, so bathe only when needed. The Shetland Sheepdog was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1911.
