Ohio, also known known as the “Buckeye State” is well known for being the birthplace of seven U.S. Presidents it has produced and its loyal College Football fans. The 17th State in the U.S. is well known for its music and sporting cultures. The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame calls Cleveland home, while the Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in Canton. Ohio was also home to the nations first professional baseball team, the Cincinnati Reds. Originally a part of the Northwest Territory, Ohio’s boundaries and Constitution were approved by President Thomas Jefferson in 1803, making them the 17th State in the Union. During early colonization of the original 13 states, many Native American tribes migrated into Ohio Territory. Some of these tribes included the Ottawas, Shawnees, and the Eries to name a few. The Ohio state motto has caused quite a buzz in years past. The state was sued in 1997 for its motto being a violation of the first amendment. The plaintiffs felt that the motto ” With God all Things are Possible” was a violation of the 1st amendments’ guaranteed separation of church and state. The court ruled in favor of Ohio, allowing the state to retain its motto. While North Carolina is acknowledged as the place of the first powered flight, Dayton, OH was the birthplace of the famous Wright Brothers. Speaking of flying, it just so happens that Neil Armstrong, the first man to step foot on the Moon, was for within Ohio’s borders as well. Automobile drivers and pedestrians owe a great deal of their safety to Ohio, as it was home to the first traffic light in the U.S. in 1914. if you are a fan of the Hot Dog, you owe this state some gratitude because of Harry M Stevens, who created the first Hot Dog in 1900. Once ahead of the curve in technology, Cleveland was the first city in the world to use electricity to light its streets and homes in 1879. This is probably a direct result of the the fact that the man who invented the light bulb, Thomas Edison, was an Ohio native. Other great inventions that originated within the borders of the Buckeye State were Goodyear Tires, the Phonograph, and the first Motion Picture camera. Some other notable people from Ohio include the Great baseball Player Cy Young, Director Steven Spielberg, and Golfer Jack Nicklaus.
As of 1988, the state recognized the White Tail Deer as its State Animal. Accompanying the Deer is the Sate Reptile, the Black Racer Snake, and the Northern Cardinal as the State Bird. The nickname the “Buckeye State” is derived from the fact there was a large population of Buckeye Trees that are present in the State. The word Buckeye originates from the Indian word “Hetuck”, which meant the Buckeye nut resembled the eye of a deer. Some other notable state symbols are the Ohio Flint (gemstone), The Ladybug (insect), and the Red Carnation (flower). As in many other states, the Labrador Retriever is viewed as the most popular dog breed in the state.
With over 11.5 million residents, Ohio is the 7th most populous state in the country. Ohio has a strong presence in the national economy, being home to Corporate giants like Goodyear Tire, Proctor & Gamble, and Wendy’s to name a few. As for tourist attractions and sporting, look no further. The State has a number of great attractions like the previously mentioned Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the Ohio State Buckeyes. For those of you who enjoy nature, there are 83 State Parks and the Wayne National Forest.
