Massachusetts, also known as the “Bay State”, is a commonwealth rich in history. Massachusetts achieved statehood on February 6th, 1788 becoming the 6th state in the union. You might say it was the birthplace of the American Revolution against Britain with the Boston Tea Party taking place in 1773 and the Boston Massacre in 1770. These two events forced Great Britain into action against the New England colony, and caused the increased tension that sparked the Revolutionary War. Massachusetts is also known for being the home to the second successful permanent British colony in North America, with the Pilgrims landing in Plymouth in 1620 carried by the Mayflower. Norfolk County, Massachusetts must have greatness in the water, being it was the birthplace of four U.S. Presidents. This impressive list includes revolutionary John Adams, John Quincy Adams, John F. Kennedy, and George W. Bush. Massachusetts is also known for being the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, a period that marked great change in the American economy. With the introduction of Textiles, Steam Power, and Iron Making, this period change manufacturing in the U.S. permanently. The states heavy reliance on industry led to a heavy decline during the Great Depression following the stock market crash of 1929. Following the Depression, Massachusetts went through a period of economic adjustment as it de-industrialized. A period of recovery and eventual economic incline came with the arrival of many “High tech” and “Research” based companies calling Massachusetts home. The Commonwealth was home to the first university in the United States, Harvard, founded in 1636. Quincy, Massachusetts was the birthplace of three well known American brands, Dunkin Donuts coffee shops, Titleist golf balls, and the Howard Johnson hotel chains. Two of the most well known Islands in the U.S. are located off the shores of Massachusetts, Martha’s Vineyards and Nantucket, both formed by Glaciers during the Ice Age. Along with the mentioned Presidents that came from the Bay State, it was also home to other famous people such as Benjamin Franklin (Scientist/Statesman), John Hancock (Statesman), and well known children’s author Dr. Seuss Theodore Geisel.

As of 1979, Massachusetts recognized the Boston Terrier as its state dog. Originally crossed between an English Bulldog and an English Terrier, it is known as the first purebred dog breed developed in America. The “Right Whale” was adopted as the state mammal in 1980. One of the most endangered whale species in the world, they were hunted to near extinction by whalers in the 1800’s. Today there is thought to be no more than 350 of this type of whale in existence. Massachusetts has a vast number of state symbols compared to most other states. Some of them include the Wild Turkey (State Game Bird), the Tabby (State Cat), The Morgan Horse(state Horse), and the Cod (State Fish). This state also boasts 78 State Forests, 1 National Park, and 2 National Historic Parks.

Having a population of over 6.6 million residents, Massachusetts is the 14th most populous state in the country. With a per capita income exceeding $50,000, they are the third highest state in that regard nation wide. Having a large presence in the BioTech, Collegiate, and Finance markets, Massachusetts has a strong economic presence. For a sports fan, Massachusetts is a hotbed of sporting culture. From Foxboro to Fenway, any sports fan will love it within the Bay State’s borders. It is also known for being home to Springfield, the site of the first Basketball game, and the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame.
