Indiana is a state known as the Crossroads of America. Nicknamed the Hoosier State, many associate the name with the Indiana University “Hoosiers”, but nobody really knows the origin of the name. In 1787 the government named present day Indiana a part of the “Northwest Territory”. The Northwest Territory was made up of what is today Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana. In 1800 U.S. Congress decided to separate Ohio from the territory leaving what was left known as the “Indiana Territory”. Eventually the establishment of Michigan and Illinois from the territory created the Indiana we know today. They achieved statehood on December 11th, 1816 becoming the 19th U.S. State. Indianapolis was named the state capitol in 1825 and remains such to date. The origin of Indiana, which means “Land of Indians” likely had to do in large part with the diverse number of Native American tribes that resided in this area. Some of these tribes were the Shawnee, Iroquois, and Huron just to name a few. The state is also known for being one of the nations largest consumers of Fossil Fuels, and is the home to the largest coal power plant in the country, Gibson Generating Station. Indiana has had a modest number of famous people originate within its borders, such as Larry Bird, James Dean, and David Letterman.

The state of Indiana doesn’t have a state animal as of now, but if they need one the Labrador Retriever may be a good choice. It is the most popular dog breed in the state by many peoples standards. They do however have a state bird, which is the Cardinal and has been since 1933. Bedford, IN is known as the “Limestone Capitol of the World” which made Limestone the sensible choice for a state stone in 1971. Other known state symbols are the Tulip Poplar tree and the Peony flower. Although the Hoosier state is not really known for its wildlife, it is home to a number of endangered bat species.

Indiana is the 16th most populous of the 50 United States with a population of over 6.5 million. While a lot people associate the state with the Indianapolis Colts NFL team. The state was home to the very first U.S. long distance auto race in 1911 at the Indianapolis Motor speedway. Known today as the “Indy 500”, it draws race fans from across the world to its gates each year and provides a nice economic boost for the state.
