Your German Shepherd Puppy and You

Your German Shepherd Puppy

Few dogs are as wonderful to have along with you in this crazy journey we call life as a German Shepherd. They are loyal, strong, obedient, intelligent, and highly adaptable. If you are looking for a protector, they fill the role beautifully; if you are looking for a friend, they are friendly and loving; and if you are looking for a service dog, they have served in the military and other professional capacities for decades upon decades. Yet all of this starts when they are puppies – if you don’t manage to train your German Shepherd right, from youth, you’ll almost certainly come to regret it.

Get ‘Em While They’re Young

Within the first two to six months of a German Shepherd’s life, it is vital that you begin their training so that they are able to trained properly. Waiting too long will allow negative behaviors to take root while robbing you of the opportunity to reinforce positive behaviors. As a “pack leader” – for that is certainly what you must establish yourself as in your German Shepherd’s eyes – it is up to you to take control of the environment, make one that your dog can trust and be comfortable in, and providing training through repetition and verbal and physical commands.

A Canine Friend and Protector

One common thing that is important to teach is for your dog to learn not to pull on their leash. Obviously your dog will have to be on a leash for much of their time in public, at least until they are truly obedient and controlled, though even then many municipalities require leashes regardless of the dog’s training. Training your dog not to bite, to socialize with other dogs and new people, to not bark at new people all the time, and of course, to respond to your commands, is important. These are all things your dog can and should learn – and you’re in luck that you have a German Shepherd, as their reputation for obedience and ability to be trained is astounding. Give them what they need and they will become the canine friend and protector you always wanted!
