Choosing a Yorkshire Terrier for Your Family

Is a Yorkshire Terrier Good for Your Kids?

Of course, you’re going to have a lot of questions when it comes to selecting a dog to become a part of your family. You want the new dog to fit perfectly into your home and household, to get along with your family, to be comfortable and happy and to make others feel comfortable and happy. When you have a dog in your home that is not a good fit, it can be an utter disaster! Thankfully, breeds like the Yorkshire Terrier are great in the home and with families – a social dog that is intelligent, obedient, and fun. Yet there are certain things to consider, such as just how well a dog like a Yorkshire Terrier will do with your children.

Always a Concern

Children are always a concern with pets. Children, after all, have a uniquely different thought process that doesn’t always reflect on how to treat pets or on the fact that pets are, well, not human and will consequently act very differently. With any dog, you need to be concerned about this; if the breed is not well-suited to being around children, then you definitely don’t want that breed in your home. Otherwise, the dog can become unhappy, you could form a bad relationship with your dog, and your dog or children could even be in danger.

Choose Wisely

The Yorkshire Terrier isn’t necessarily bad with children, but their small size should still give you pause if you have kids. Young children, especially those who are below five or six, could potentially drop a Yorkshire Terrier, step on them, or even just clutch them too tightly – leading to the dog being hurt or, at the very least, defending itself against what the child does not realize it is doing. A well-socialized Terrier is still a great part of a family, and if your children are older there won’t be a problem – but there very easily could be if your family isn’t the right fit. Choose wisely and live happily ever after!
