When and What to Feed Your Dog When They Lose Appetite

When your pet is not eating it can be incredibly worrisome and frustrating. Having options and answers can help make your pet’s life and your own much more comfortable and easier. With these options you may find a good way to properly care for your animal without spending a small fortune or devoting a massive amount of time to feeding. Be sure, however, that if your dog is displaying a loss of appetite with vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of energy to take them to the veterinarian immediately. These symptoms could be signs of something painful and/or deadly.

Drink Plenty of Water

Make sure your furry friend has plenty of water to drink throughout the day. Dogs may become nauseous if not properly hydrated and will refuse to eat. By keeping fresh water in your home, outside, and carrying water for your pooch as you walk, hike, or play they will be able to stay well hydrated and may have a better appetite.

You will also want to make sure the water is clean. While dogs are not always the most particular eaters or drinkers they will refuse water they do not think is healthy. This does not mean you need to use a Brita filter for your dog’s water but you will want to make sure their water is always and free of debris.

If your dog is dehydrated give them Pedialyte, which will replace the electrolytes they need. You can also give them similar drinks that are made specifically for dogs.

Let Them Eat Grass

Eating grass will induce vomiting in dogs. They may have eaten something foreign (socks, bad meat, heaven-knows-what else) or could have a bug that can only be treated with getting it out of the body. If they eat a large amount of grass or do so every time they go outside it is time to go to your veterinarian.

Change Their Diet

It will not be as simple as it sounds but changing their diet may help them digest food easier and feel better. You may want to find better quality foods for your dog then you have originally bought. You can also change up the medium (dry instead of wet), which may help digestion. If they still do not improve you may need to try creating your own dog food. Creating food out of veggies and meat scrapes from your own dinner can do this. Before doing so talk to your veterinarian, however. They will be able to give you the best advice.
