What’s a Cockapoo?

A Bit of History

Cockapoos are a hybrid between a Cocker Spaniel and a poodle. This pup was originally bred in the 1950s and has become one of the most popular dogs in the U.S. Cockapoos were bred for their compact size, energy level, loyalty, and long life span. Because of their popularity, however, this bred is susceptible to overbreeding in puppy mills and can have more health problems. These can be wonderful dogs for large and small families so if you decide to adopt be sure to do so from a reputable breeder or shelter. If you want an older dog shelters are often full of mixed breeds with some cockapoo. There are plenty of older and senior pups looking for their forever home.

These pooches love to be around there families and are incredibly social dogs. They enjoy meeting new people and will often socialize fairly well. Be sure when you adopt to begin socializing your pup as soon as possible. This will help them feel more comfortable in their home and around the world.

With that in mind, cockapoos need to be around their family as much as possible. Without someone to at least be near they can suffer from anxiety and distress which can create a very annoyed and destructive dog.

These dogs can be somewhat to very active. They are best placed in a home with a family so the children will have a playmate and the adults will have a work out buddy. Cockapoos need at least one long walk a day and thrive when given two and a game of fetch. They still enjoy a night in on the couch with you but will jump for joy at the sight of a leash.

Dislikes

Being alone is the worst for many dogs including cockapoos. They would much rather relax with their family or go out for a run or even a swim. They need mental stimulation so they do not become anxious or depressed.

Depending on their temperament your pooch may be more or less active depending on the dominant traits from their parents. Most cockapoos will always love physical activity while other may be home bodies. The best way to deal with both types is to crate train them and do any further training with positive reinforcement. This way they know you will provide them space if need be but will always be happy to spend time with them.
