Shih-Tzu – The “Little Lion”

Despite the term “chrysanthemum dog” which is an American mistranslation for this dog breed’s cute looks,  Shih Tzu in Mandarin Chinese directly translates to “lion.”
The breed folklore contends that associating to stories of Buddhist mythology, Tibetan lamas bred the Shih Tzu as miniature lion replica. The Americanized name derives its flowery name due to the way their hair grows and forms from the snout and about the face in all directions, like a chrysanthemum. In China, the Shih Tzu enjoy a more poetic, to many, recipe definition if its name, wherein they say the special dog:
“a dash of lion, several teaspoons of rabbit, a couple of ounces of domestic cat, one part court jester, a dash of ballerina, a pinch of old man (Chinese), a bit of beggar, a tablespoon of monkey, one part baby seal, a dash of teddy bear, and the rest dogs of Tibetan and Chinese origin.”
While many smaller dogs enjoy a grand reputation for a grander attitude, or more bluntly stated, they simply don’t get along well with others (dogs, cats, other household pets, guests, etc.), the Shih Tzu is a true lover who wants to love, be loved, and loves being loved. They actually do very well with other pets, and while a little excitable and guarded about your affection, they are eager to meet your friends and they’re stranger friendly too.
While not exactly docile, Shih Tzu’s don’t require a lot of exercise either. They enjoy short walks. They enjoy showing you how smart they are and what they can learn beyond what you teach them as well. Using their intelligence, desire to showoff, and need to train will combine wonderfully for a fruitful, long relationship. These handsome little Einstein’s excel at obedience training and surely don’t mind living up to their flowery or lioness monikers; so, a little training or exercise followed up by some personal pampering is an ideal dog’s day if you’re a Shih Tzu.
This little heartbreaker may tug at your patience while tugging at your heartstrings.  Their need to socialize with you, be affectionate, and feel secure, just might find them bedding in your clothing in your absence.  An old t-shit may last longer than your patience …
