Saint Bernards

Saint Bernard

What to know about Saint Bernards.

How to find out if a Saint Bernard is right for you.

Saint Bernards were bred and used in a monastery in Switzerland. These gentle giants were used to predict avalanches and save victims who were caught in the snow. Because of their large bodies and massive paws they were able to tread through the snow without falling through and they were able to stay warm for long excursions out in the mountains. Now they are only recusing people in competitions since the invention of the helicopter and have become a wonderful family dog. Before you decide to adopt, however, here are a few things you may want to consider.

Bring a drool rag

Because the breed has extra skin around the mouth to keep warm they often drool and leave puddles throughout your home. If you adopt a Saint Bernard be sure to always have a drool rag handy and understand that your home may not always be perfect.

These dogs are also quite large (growing to be 200 pounds in some cases) and will need plenty of room and food to keep them happy. Be sure you are able to financially care for your pet before adopting. They do wonderfully outdoors but they are a family dog and should not be kept in a kennel.

Beethoven

Because of their intelligence and ability to execute difficult and complex tricks, Saint Bernards have been featured in film for their acting chops. One example is the movie, Beethoven, where a Saint Bernard is the main character. This lovable movie shows the soft side to these gentle giants and helps small children see that large dogs are often just as sweet and careful as any other pooch.

If you decide to adopt this breed be aware of their intelligence so they do not become bored or anxious. Make sure your new pooch gets plenty of exercise through walking, hiking, swimming, and playing with the family. Because these dogs were bred to save lives they have phenomenal stamina and love a challenge. During exercising you will want to give them tasks to complete such as finding their toy or learning tricks along the trail. This will help you bond with your new friend, help him or her understand new or frequently used commands, and they will be to feel accomplished in their purpose to make you happy.

Adopting a new dog can be a difficult but rewarding challenge. Once you find the breed that is right for you find a reputable rescue or a responsible breeder. They will be able to answer any questions you have and even help you learn how to work with your dog so you can live together happily.
