Rottweilers – Brave and Loyal

Rottweilers have always been known as brave and loyal companions for families. They have been trained as fierce protectors for homes, businesses, and even in war times. This has lead to a not-so-favorable opinion about the breed accusing them of attacking passerby at houses or becoming violent. Like all canines, a Rottweiler will do what it is trained to do, this does not make it a good or bad dog. By learning about its health, behavior, and health hopefully you will see that a Rottweiler can become a cherish addition to your home just like any other dog.

History

It is assumed that the breed descended from Rover dogs that were bred in ancient Rome. Bred to be loyal, protective, and a hard worker, the Rottweiler was used in many police precincts throughout the country as well as in villages in Europe.

Temperament

This breed can be incredibly intelligent, energetic, and loyal. By making sure your dog is well trained and socialized from an early age you may ensure a healthy and happy family life with other animals such as other dogs and cats. A Rottweiler will question dominance if given the chance. Be sure to establish your role in the family while the dog is young so it does not become aggressive.

Rottweilers may become aggressive or bored because of their high intelligence. Be sure to include them in your family’s everyday lives so they do not become jaded and begin ripping your couch apart. Engaging your dog in a family game of Frisbee, a hike, or a swim can help them stay mentally and physically engaged.

If you decide you want a Rottweiler be sure to have plenty of time for walks, hikes, games, and other outdoor activities. This will keep your dog healthy and happy. Rottweilers do best in families of three or more. This is because there will always be someone to be with and children will be more eager to play. Be sure to get the Rottweiler when it is a puppy if you introduce it to your family. This means the dog will grow with your family and learn the boundaries necessary to live in your home.

Health

The breed is generally healthy but can suffer from a few ailments. Like all dogs, they often fall victim to genetic illnesses and issues such as elbow dysplasia, heart defects, and eyesight issues. Before purchasing a puppy from a breeder be sure to research the breeder as well as the genetic background of the potential pet. You may be able to avoid potential disaster in the future.
