Golden Retriever puppyCreating a first aid kit for your furry friend can help relieve stress and anxiety if/when your pooch or kitten gets hurt and needs some help. While you should always call your veterinarian if your pet is hurt you can help them by applying basic first aid. While a bandage or a quick cleaning may not seem important at the time, keeping the wound clean and safe can mean a world of difference down the road. With some education and these tools you’ll be able to help your furry friend and get them to the road to recovery.

1. Hydrogen Peroxide

Just as a rule you should always have hydrogen peroxide in your home. It is vital for keeping wounds (human or otherwise) clean and while they are healing. Be sure to avoid putting hydrogen peroxide on burns, however. It can cause the burnt skin to bubble and may actually worsen the wound.

2. Soft blanket

It is always good to comfort your pet with something soft and comfortable when they are in pain. Having a blanket can protect them from the elements and may also help them feel more at ease.

3. Hot and cold packs

Instant hot and cold packs work wonders for burns or strained muscles. If your pup or kitten is sore or they are having problems with their joints a pack may be the perfect solution until they get to a vet.

4. First aid tape

First aid tape helps keep bandaging stay in place while heading to the vet or while it is healing. You will want to change tape and bandaging regularly to avoid contamination or deterioration of the skin.

5. Medical gauze

Similar to the tape the medical gauze with help the wound heal and stay clean. It can, however, become dirty quickly if your pet is trying to figure out what it is or if they refuse to stop running through the mud. Ask your vet and they will let you know what to do.

6. First aid scissors

These are used to get medical tape off or to remove any fabric or debris away from the wound. Before using your should always sterilize them (especially if they are being used to cut skin). You can do this by sterilizing them and then keeping them in plastic bags in your kit.
