Miniature Poodles: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Miniature Poodle

Miniature poodles have been portrayed in the media as very fragile but nothing could be further from the truth. These dogs are perfect for first time owners and are incredibly intelligent and eager to have fun with their owner. By training your new pet early and firmly you will be able to avoid the more cliché problems attached to the breed and you will learn that they are just as loving, loyal, and fantastic as any other dog.

Adorable and hilarious circus performers

Because of their intelligence miniature poodles were trained to preform in the circus. They were able to execute difficult and complex tricks that would amaze the crowd and they were able to use their playfulness and agility to even make everyone laugh.

This breed is always happy to please their owner and wants to work and play with their family. If you decide to adopt a poodle you need to understand that it is a part of your family. Do not leave it outside in a kennel or refuse to take it on family outings. These dogs can become bored, anxious, and therefore destructive. The happiest a miniature poodle (and most dogs) will be is when they are with you.

Doesn’t need a lot of room

Unlike other intelligent dogs, it does not require much room to stretch out and is perfect for apartment living. If you are living on your own and would like a companion for daily walks or even a hike a miniature poodle may be perfect. After a while however, be sure you bring a small bag for them to sit comfortably in. If you’re going on a hike they may tire on the way home and need someone to help them get back safely.

You will also want to be aware of the time your pooch will spend alone in your apartment if you cannot take him or her to work with you. If you have a small space they feel safe in, their bed, your bedroom, etc. you may want to focus making their time away from you in their spot. That way they feel secure and won’t tear apart the apartment waiting for your return.

Good for first time owners

Unlike many small breeds a miniature poodle is very forgiving and can learn commands quickly and easily. When going for a walk make sure they heel or stay next to you instead of in front so they know you’re the leader. Be sure to create clear commands as well. This will help your dog become a perfect pooch for you and your family.
