Is a Saint Bernard the Right Puppy for You?

Saint Bernards are very good dogs to adopt as long as you know what you’re getting into – and are prepared for it.

Saint Bernards do not make good guard dogs, but can be territorial and develop a bad temperament

if not socialized early. It’s strongly recommended to socialize them. They are good with children, but not especially playful.

They need daily exercise and room to roam. A big yard works well, but they also need access to the house and do NOT tolerate heat well. They like cold weather and are at risk of heat stroke and death if left outside in the heat.

On hot days, they should stay indoors in air conditioning.

They do shed and need daily brushing. They also drool – no getting around it.

Saint Bernards live about 8-10 years.

Finding the right Saint Bernard Puppy.

The Saint Bernard Club of America (SBCA) provides a listing of Saint Bernard breeders, but according to their website the listing “should not be construed as an endorsement by the SBCA”.

They suggest that you visit as many breeders as possible before making a decision.

You should be able to see both parents, and the breeders should be more than happy to supply you with references.

The breeder should be socializing the puppy and providing a clean enviroment.

The puppies should be good natured and friendly.

Saint Bernard puppies shouldn’t be adopted until after seven weeks.

Hopefully these tips will help you find the right Saint Bernard puppy for your family.
