I have lost control of my Dog!

Does your dog think it runs the show? Is he challenging your authority and being difficult? It is likely that he is still in his “puppy stage” and with all the distractions around him, even a well-trained dog may not always listen. This usually means its time to reassert yourself as Alpha. Dogs who live in a home where the pack order is clear are more secure, calm, and happy.

If your puppy is challenging you, you may notice certain signs. He may become territorial about space or food. He may start jumping on people even if you had trained him not to. He may become rebellious during training sessions. Or he may start marking (peeing on random things). If it’s not in your demeanor to sternly order your puppy around, no worries. There are many ways to reassert yourself as Alpha without yelling orders.

  1. After You, NOT!:Always be the first one out the door when leaving with your dog, you lead, he follows, thats the order of the pack!
  2. Dinner Time: Sit down and eat before your dog, and never give in to begging.
  3. Work on basic commands: Going through the sit, stay phase of training is a great way to establish your leadership.
  4. Be a giant: Never get down to your dog’s level, it give them a sense of equality.
  5. Get out of my way!: If your dog is blocking your path, nudge him out of the way and say “move!”. Do not walk around him.
  6. Down!: If the dog is allowed on the bed, sofa, or chair, change that. Let them know you are in control.
  7. Take his chow: You should be able, as the pack leader, to take his food whenever you want without him reacting negatively.
  8. Calm down: It is in a dog’s nature to be excited, if you are calm, he will be too.

If you are anything like me, you would feel bad after you are “tough” on your dog. Fact is, by having a pack order established, it gives him a sense of security that a dog needs, and make him a happier pet. Take your dog for a run, don’t let him run you!
