How Often Should I Feed My Puppy?
When you get your new puppy, it will seem so tempting to just feed him constantly, as he will always seem hungry! Alot of people think that the only difference between feeding a puppy and feeding a grown dog is the type and amount of food, but this is untrue. Proper feeding habits are vital to a dogs growth and development. Also the types of food that you give your puppy can affect many things including but not limited to their coat, digestive system, and general development. Getting your puppy on a schedule in this respect is as important as any other routine your puppy has. Here is some useful information in regards to feeding:
- Puppies under 3 months of age should be fed at least four times a day.
- Puppies 3 to 6 months of age should be given three meals a day.
- Adult dogs can be fed once or twice a day.
Whatever you do, make sure to feed your dog a good quality, fresh dog food formulated to meet his unique needs. There has been a lot of interest recently in balanced diets and foods supplemented with omega fatty acids, glucosamine and chondroitin. Iams has been a leader in creating foods to meet these needs, and they’ve made some fascinating advancements in this area.
Omega fatty acids help the skin and coat. It is important to have the right balance. Glucosamine and chondrointin help to maintain healthy joints. Iams has formulated foods that incorporate these important ingredients while meeting the different dietary needs of puppies, adult dogs and senior dogs. Dogs like routine, so establish a feeding schedule and stick to it. A good time to feed your dog is during family meal times. This will occupy him while the rest of the family is eating. I would like to thank Dr. Jon for some very useful information on this subject!
