Flea Season Has Arrived at the Dog Health Spotlight

Flea Season

Flea Season is on the way!

With Flea Season in sight we need to discuss three ways that seem to be the most common and most effective way to prevent these nasty pests during .There are a number of products out there to fight the battle between pets and fleas.

The first product is called Sentinel. This is a tablet that is given monthly to your dog. It is flavored, so it’s like a special treat for your pet. This particular product also prevents heartworm as well… two for the price of one! Sentinel prevents the production of egg and larval stages from occurring, therefore preventing the fleas from reproducing, which is vital in flea season.

Another product is called Capstar, which comes in the form of a pill and must be placed on the dog’s tongue or can be hidden in their food. This form of flea prevention should only be used if your pet already has fleas. It will start working in as little as 30 minutes and will continue to kill each flea within a 24 hour time period. If you think your pet has encountered fleas while you are out and about, it is a good idea to give them one of these pills to prevent any fleas from coming into your home.

Frontline is probably the most common form of flea prevention. These are applied to the skin of the dog by separating the hair and applying the liquid directly. There are different doses depending on the size of the dog so be careful that you purchase the right one. Frontline should start working immediately and should be given monthly.

Remember, fleas are most common in the heat of the summer and the months of September and October. Not only are fleas annoying to us, but they are just as bad for your pets. So take the extra time and make sure that your pet is itch free!
