Is Your Dog Nervous?

nervous dogHave A Nervous Dog?

Are small dogs actually more nervous, or more prone to anxiety, than larger dogs? In short, no; dogs of any size can experience anxiety in larger or smaller amounts, with much of that behavior and attitude being owed to the upbringing, environment and training of the dog. It’s important that, when looking at a dog for adoption, you be able to recognize signs of anxiety and nervousness in a dog; you can help your dog recover from this affliction only if you can recognize that this is something that they are struggling with. Here are just some of the things that should tip you off to anxiety in your dog:

  1. Nervous Peeing

Sure, dogs pee; who doesn’t? But, you may have noticed that your dog pees not just when it “wants” to pee, but when it has been separated from you for a few hours, or when a new person enters the house, if they pee, then this is definitely a sign of anxiety. The dog may run around the house, wagging its tail, with its head lowered and a trail of urine left behind. While this may be, in part, due to a weak bladder, it is more than likely a submissive and anxious behavior from your dog.

  1. Trembling

It’s a stereotype that small dogs shiver a lot, but for many dogs this isn’t due to being cold, but due to anxiety. This trembling can be so bad that it can in fact be quite unhealthy for their physical health. The trembling may manifest when approached by strange people and animals, or when the dog hears a loud sound. Some dogs, of course, tremble at nearly any noise. In any case, this is a very common manifestation of anxiety.

  1. Belly Crouching

Submissive behaviors are normal for some dogs, but overly submissive behaviors can be a symptom of anxiety. Some dogs will lower themselves to their belly and creep forward on their elbows and haunches in a submissive gesture that is often a sign of anxiety and nervousness. This may seem cute, but in fact, the dog is quite anxious indeed, and it’s important that you help your dog end these behaviors!
