Keep your Dog Cool
Welcome back to Greenfield Puppies Dog Blog. With summer around the corner, it is time to start thinking of things about the warm seasons that can harm your pets. Throughout the upcoming season we will address many issues that should concern you, but first I want to talk about your dog and heat. What temperature is too hot for your dog to be outside? Think of it this way, if you walk out the front door and you are uncomfortably hot, it is even worse for your dog. Dogs are tough, believe me, but imagine being out in the blazing sun with a fur coat on, now you understand what your dog is going through. You can do a number of things to make a dog more comfortable when it is hot, giving them a bath with a hose is always effective, or if they are in a kennel outside for any reason, spraying the bottom with water is good also. Obviously always make sure your dog has plenty of water at all times, inside or out.
The single greatest preventable danger to your dog in summer, is being left in a hot car. I know, most people know better, but here are some facts just in case. On an 80 degree day the internal temperature of a car can reach 300 degrees, that is like being in an oven. Now granted, it does take some time to reach that temperature, but that is an extreme. In five minutes at 80 degrees your car will reach 130 degrees inside, leaving a window cracked for your dog won’t save them. Dogs overheat more quickly than we do, because they can’t sweat, so they burn through their water quickly compared to us. You must be aware of these things and realize even 5 minutes in a car with that type of heat can be fatal. I hope this increases the awareness for everyone out there, and I hope you and your pets enjoy the spring and summer safely.
