Dobermans: A Loyal And Watchful Dog Breed

When people think about a dog that offers protection from home burglars, the Doberman is the first type of breed that comes to mind. Also known as Doberman Pinschers, these dogs offer obedience, loyalty and affection to the dog owner who has the time and love to care for this pet. A beautiful dog with an elegant pose, Dobermans are seen most often as guardians of the home and property.

Doberman Characteristics

A Doberman is an energetic dog, needing plenty of exercise to tire them out. They are very watchful and are aware of their environment. When something isn’t right, even if it is just a tree branch tapping on the window pane, they will let their owner know with plenty of barking.

This breed of dog is also considered intelligent, obedient and fearless. These characteristics can lead to a territorial dog who is wary and fearful of strangers or other dogs. But with the right socialization and training, you can have a well-rounded Doberman who is well-behaved around strangers who you want him to interact with while protective of you when around people who are considered a threat.

While a Doberman can be the perfect pet for a family, it normally becomes attached to one particular person. So keep this in mind if you don’t like a dog considered “clingy” as it will follow you everywhere.

Caring For A Doberman

Grooming is easy for these breeds because of their short, hard coats. So cleanup of any fur will just be a quick vacuum across the rug. The Doberman breed is considered a working class dog, so you must dedicate time for daily exercise and training of your dog to enforce positive behaviors. If you fail to do this, a Doberman can become destructive in its surroundings (scratching and chewing) as it tries to release its pent-up energy and find something to do.

Regular veterinary checkups can keep most health issues to a minimum. As your puppy gets older, it’s important to have your dog undergo cardiac and hip tests, as these dogs will experience cardiomyopathy and hip dysplasia problems. With the proper treatment, care and love, your Doberman can live a very long life as these dogs have a normal lifespan of 10-to-12 years.

Give Your Doberman Plenty Of Love

If you dedicate your time and love to your Doberman, you will receive plenty of affection and loyalty in return. Dobermans do not have to be considered the scary attack dogs seen in the movies or heard about in the news. With proper training, a Doberman can be the perfect dog just for yourself or for your entire family.
