Breed Facts
Large Breed – the Dalmatian is a large breed dog, and will grow to be up to 66 inches and weight up to 70lbs. They are very active and require a great deal of exercise. A large fenced yard can be important when owning these dogs. However, they are not outdoor dogs. Due to their short hair, they are very sensitive to the weather outdoors.
Health Facts
The Dalmatian has several health risks that come with the breed. First, they are prone to deafness in one or both ears and should have their hearing tested at an early age. Another breed trait is a uric acid anomaly that can lead to urate stones. They do best on a non-beef based diet to prevent this. They can also be prone to hip dysplasia.
Personality
While Dalmatians are very friendly, people oriented dogs they do better with older children. It is very important to socialize them both with a variety of people and other animals early in their life. They do not do well when left alone for long periods of time. They are very territorial and will become aggressive if not trained properly. They are very intelligent but free thinkers and can be difficult to train.
Grooming
Even though the breed is short-haired, they shed frequently, year round. Brushing them with a firm brush can help eliminate some of the problem. However, they will continuously shed. Bathing on a regular basis can keep their coat in healthy shape.
Dalmatians are a beautiful dog, but they are not for everyone. They require a great deal of care and attention. Consider carefully before committing to the ownership and care of a Dalmatian puppy, as it is a large responsibility.
