Dachshunds: Three important things to know about dachshund puppies

DachshundEnergy Level

These pups can pack a lot of energy in a small package. They have medium to high energy levels. They need daily exercise to keep them happy and healthy. While they love walks they are actually thrilled to go on hikes or just have a good, long game of fetch. If you and your pup head out for a long walk or hike be aware that you may have to carry them on the way home. Always give your pup a break if needed to avoid exhaustion and be sure to bring plenty of water for you and your pooch. They will be happy to spend time with you and will be healthier.

Be aware these dogs are extremely determined. They have been bred to catch small prey like rodents, varmints, and other pests. These pups will often burrow to catch prey and will not give up until the job is done. Keep that in mind when training them and when you are out for a walk. This determination coupled with their energy level can make it virtually impossible to give up on catching a squirrel or meeting another pooch. Be sure to keep your pup exercised and train your pet properly to avoid an overly anxious and energetic pup.

Attitude

These dogs are large pups in little bodies. They seem to know no fear and will not back down from a fight. What they have in tenacity they match in intelligence. They are incredibly smart and are wonderful problem solvers. This helped them find and catch small prey and can make them easy to train. They are, however, very independent and tenacious. When training your new pup do not waver. Dachshunds are smart but can also be stubborn. Be sure to have clear and concise commands when training so they will listen and obey. Otherwise you may have a pooch that will ignore your call to take a nap instead.

Diet

Dachshunds can gain wait quickly if given the opportunity. These dogs love to lay around and love to eat even more. While reward training with treats can be beneficial for your dog you may want to use kibble instead of MilkBones. You should also talk to your vet about your pup’s diet during puppy, adulthood, and senior years.

Family

These pups fair best with older children or individuals. They can become barky and defensive around children that are too young. If you are going to adopt a dachshund be sure to educate your family as well as train your pooch. It will keep everyone happy and safe.
