Creek stomping with your dog

Creek

Hiking can be the best exercise for you and your pup now that spring is right around the corner. It is a great excuse to get outside, invest in a field guide (and fancy water bottle), and enjoy some quality time with your pooch.

Outdoorsy Type

Not every dog is a hiker. Smaller dogs or pups that are not energetic by breed may not enjoy stomping through the creek or frapping through the meadows. If you have a small dog like a Chihuahua or a less-energetic pooch like a bulldog, they may be happier with short walks and shorter hikes. If you are looking to adopt a dog who enjoys running through the woods you may want a larger, more agile dog such as a malinois, pitbull, or sheltie. Each of these dogs adore romping outside and have plenty of stamina to keep up. If you need a smaller pooch who is up to hit the trails you may want to get into the market for a Jack Russell terrier or corgi. While they are small they are mighty. Both breeds were bred to run long distances and either hunt or herd. Both are superb for the outdoorsy apartment dweller.

Bring Clean Water

While you may be running on a beach or in a creek you never really know what is in the water around you. If you are bringing a water bottle for yourself bring another one for your dog. They need fresh water to stay hydrated and happy. Every now and then you should stop on the side of the trail and offer your pup a dish of water. This way they know you have plenty for them and they will not run to the nearest stagnant puddle when they are thirsty. Luckily many dog water bottles also come with a collapsible dish so it is easy for you to carry and your pup to use.

Take Breaks

While your dog may look ready to go, sometimes they will need a break. Always sit down for a little if they are panty heavily or sit down on their own throughout the hike. They will always want to follow you but may need a second to catch their breath. This is also a wonderful time to give them water and maybe have a small picnic if you have the time.

Having a four-legged hiking buddy is wonderful and can help you and your dog bond. They will be happier and more relaxed and you will finally have someone to hit the trails who won’t slow you down. Happy hiking!
