What Credentials Must A Good Service Dog Have?

Service dogs help those with disabilities. We see them help the blind navigate streets safely by stopping them from walking into oncoming traffic, and help them walk safely through buildings or restaurants, or on airplanes. They can help the deaf by alerting them to dangers they can’t hear, or by letting them know someone is at the door. They may help a wheelchair-bound individual by pulling their chair. But that is not all service dogs can do.

The truth is service dogs can do many tasks you or I may not even be aware of because we take for granted we can do them ourselves. For Instance, they are trained to alert others if their owner is having a seizure, or diabetics to check their blood sugar levels. They can even be trained to sniff out food allergens. They do have to be trained, however, and it takes from eighteen to twenty-four months; not just a matter of days in a boot camp.

What about the laws?

The

United States Department of Justice allows business owners, including restaurants, to ask just two questions of those who bring service dogs into their establishments.

1) Is the dog required because of a disability?

2) What is it the dog does to help with the disability?

One has to have a legitimate disability to use a service dog and the dog has to do something to help them. These animals are trained not to disrupt the course of business by their behaviors or barking. They are trained to stay calm and pay attention to their owner’s needs.

What about certification?

Actually, unless a trainer is willing to certify that the dog is trained, you don’t really need one. There is no law requiring one, not even for housing in pet-free buildings. There are a number of sites that may require you to get something such doctors’ notes, but usually just filling out an application and paying a fee is enough without even testing the dog. These are scams to skirt the laws regarding dogs.
