Corgis: Taking over the Internet One Belly Rub At A Time

Cergis everywhere! What is it about corgis? Is it their stumpy legs, huge ears, or their derptastic faces? Well it could be a combination of their biology and their diehard fan base. Before 2009 corgis were virtually undetectable on the Internet but quickly “frapped “ into the forefront of our collective conscious and luckily have yet to leave. Here are a few reasons as to why they can’t seem to escape our society’s corgi obsession.

Their Impact

These floofy pants have gained 20,000 hits on YouTube partly because of one video posted roughly five years ago. Before this video was posted there was not mention of these pups in the media. Once the video went viral these dogs were featured on several television shows, news sites, and Vice.

Since these sweet little stumpers have had there initial moment of fame they have taken over several blogs, websites, and have subreddits dedicated to their breed. Even Buzzfeed has adopted the corgi as their logo and meetups have been made simply to have corgis meet other corgis.

Biology

Some believe that a massive part of their popularity is due to their physical makeup. Because of their stumpy legs, large eyes, and pudgy bodies these pups trigger all of our nurturing and maternal instincts, which makes us think they are “cute.” We see them much like we see human infants because of their exaggerated characteristics. This along with their sunny disposition will make them even more attractive to us.

Personality

Possibly what is most desirable about this breed is their seemingly endless amount of happiness. Corgis are known for “smiling” and being more than happy to romp around the yard or snuggle in for the night. These pups are wonderful for large families or individuals. If you live in a small home without a yard, however, they need to have plenty of exercise so you will need to go one a long walk or hike at least once a day (twice is better) and you will need to be very strict about their diet. Corgis can gain weight quickly and the weight adversely affects them quickly as well. So go for a run, a hike, or just play some fetch to keep you and your new best friend healthy.
