Coon Hounds in General

Coonhounds are 100 percent American. These were bred to hunt small game up trees so hunters could shoot the prey and it would fall to the ground. This breed was bred by combining a British foxhound and European hunting dogs which created a dog perfect for southern terrain with plenty of stamina and determination.

These pups are calm, gentle, and friendly pets that are actually perfect for small children and families. They are very patient with members of the family and extremely forgiving. These pooches are incredibly affectionate as well. They love to snuggle up with the family to watch a movie or take a nap. Coonhounds thrive in the home with the family and genuinely desire human companionship. If there is another dog in the home, however, they will often be very affectionate with them as well. Be sure to have the hierarchy well established in the home if you introduce another dog. Otherwise the hound may try to fight to establish dominance.

Hounds must be fenced in or on a leash when outside. They have a strong instinct to hunt and roam over many miles. If you decide to adopt a hound be sure to install a fence at least three feet high. Hounds have been known to jump impossible fences and even climb trees to roam and catch prey. You should also take your pup on a long walk every day so they can expel some of the restless energy. This will help them be less likely to run off and will keep them healthy and happy. If you are able to walk them every day these pups will be very mild mannered and will usually sleep the day away if given a choice.

Red Bone Coon Hounds

Red bone hounds are much like any other hound in that they are affectionate, loyal, active, and fun loving. They also require a long daily walk and plenty of time with their family. Red bone hounds are used to hunt anywhere from swamplands to mountains. Their red coat makes them easy to find for hunters and differentiate from the small game being hunted. These pooches must have a somewhat strict diet in puppyhood as well as their senior years. During this time they can become overweight quickly. Be sure to monitor their food intake and be sure to exercise with them regularly.

Bloodhounds

Possibly the most recognizable of the bunch these pups are remarkable trackers and have been used in hunting as well as missing person cases. They are incredibly loving, sweet, and patient. They adore afternoon naps and sitting with you while you read, just be sure to have a drool rag. You should also take them on plenty of walks and hiking trips. They can become lethargic otherwise.
