But My Dog Loves Table Scraps!
And so it goes without saying, any dog will love to eat their master’s leftovers! But the fact is it is horrible for your dog! I have seen this backfire over and over again, either with the dog just getting an upset stomach, or with a more serious concern like pancreatitis. I myself used to be guilty of throwing my pet my leftovers after every meal, that was before I realized how harmful it can be to a dog to ingest some of the things we eat every day. For example, when I was young, often I would feed the dog the rest of my sub or cheese steak, not realizing that onions are actually toxic to a canine. Also, I recall seeing someone letting their dog have the rest of their bowl of chocolate ice cream, again, chocolate harms dogs. But here is the kicker, or the all time saddest series of events I have seen in regards to a dogs eating habits. A relative of mine cares for a Min-Pin, which is a dog that should range between 7-10 lbs. This dog used to be as fast as a lightning bolt, literally I would have bet she would have given a rabbit a run for its money speed and agility wise. But now she is 16 lbs, has heart failure, and has suffered a near death case of pancreatitis. The vet told the owner that the sickness was caused by obesity and without a change the dog would live a greatly shortened life. This situation was caused by someone throwing her food under the table during meals, and an excess of dog treats. Now because of it, she will probably not reach her full life expectancy of 14-16 years.
The fact is this, dog food contains the things necessary for our dogs to live a happy, healthy life. We as owners of these animals have a responsibility to our pets to make sure they are getting the things they need to be healthy. I know it is tough not to throw Fido that last piece of your Quarter Pounder, but you will have a happier, healthier dog if you don’t. Take my word for it!
