A Brief History of the English Bulldog

People who are not familiar with the English Bulldog have no idea what a clown resides behind the grumpy sourpuss mask he shows to the world. if the breed’s popularity continues to soar, that unfamiliarity will not last for long. They currently rank sixth in overall popularity in the U.S. and enjoy the number one spot in Los Angeles.

Then and Now

The English Bulldog’s roots can be traced back to the 13th century British Isles where he was bred for tenacity and ferocity in order to stand up to his occupation – baiting bulls for sport. The Adam and Eve of the breed is thought to be a mastiff and a pug.

Today, he’s a kind and gentle creature, totally satisfied to stay home with the kids and nap with them. However let an intruder threaten and you’ll see that fierce courage still remains. Yes, the roly-poly bulldog who loves to cuddle can also do double duty as a loyal family watchdog

Caring for Bully

The bulldog is low on endurance due to that short nose he’d been bred to, so owners should lay low on the running. However he needs to be walked a few times a day since he likes his food and can easily become obese. That same notable nose accounts for the loud snoring the breed is known for, as well as, yes, the prolific drooling!

His breathing difficulties also make airline travel a dangerous proposition. In fact bulldogs have suffered more airline deaths than any other type of dog. He’s also not a good swimmer because of his disproportionately large and heavy head. Speaking of heavy, a typical adult male will weigh about 55 lbs and a female will tip the scales at 50. Due to their bulk, they are also prone to hip dysplasia.

On the positive side, the bully’s short coat requires little care, and he sheds very little. One grooming must, however, is a daily washing of his face since those wrinkles and folds of skin can harbor hidden infections

Bull Dog Sports Trivia
