Border Collie Puppies General Tips
Border Collie puppies are adorable and energetic, and can make great family pets if they are raised in the proper environment. There are some things that prospective owners need to know to keep their puppy healthy and active.
Preparing Your Home
Border Collies are very energetic and need lots of space. These dogs are not suited for small apartments. Since these dogs are born herders, they tend to chase moving vehicles. It is important for these puppies to have chew toys or they may use the legs of your favorite furniture. A baby gate works well to keep the puppies out of certain rooms in the house.
Feeding
Younger puppies should have dry puppy food soaked in water. Make sure not to use milk as these dogs are lactose intolerant. Start out feeding puppies less than three months three times a day. By the time the puppies are six months, feeding twice a day is fine. It will be easier to keep older puppies on a regular bathroom schedule if they are on a consistent feeding schedule. Plenty of fresh water should always be available.
Medical Care
Some of the genetic problems these dogs may encounter include epilepsy, hip difficulties, and eye problems. Border Collies are made for short bursts of activity, not long runs. They may get blisters on their feet or have difficulty with the pads of their feet if they’re on asphalt too much.
Grooming
It is not necessary to bathe a border collie very often. As the puppies grow their coat naturally sheds a lot of dirt. They do need to be brushed several times a week. A rough haired Border Collie needs bathed approximately every 2 to 3 months. A Border Collie with a smooth coat needs bathed quarterly.
Training
Since these dogs are highly intelligent and energetic, proper training is essential. Simple training can begin as early as 8 weeks. Be consistent when training, using the same physical gestures and tone of voice when giving commands.
