Blue Heeler Puppies

If you’re planning to adopt a Blue Heeler puppy into your home, be prepared for a challenge. Blue Heelers, aka Australian cattle dogs, are highly energetic and intelligent creatures with very specific needs. A cross between an Australian dingo and smooth collie, Blue Heeler puppies are adorable when little, but require a strong hand to keep under control as they grow.

Characteristics

From puppyhood to fully grown, your Heeler will be a bundle of energy that will keep you on the go. Although each puppy is unique in its own way, there are certain characteristics that mark this breed as different from the “norm.” Originally bred as ranch and farm work dogs, Blue Heelers have an instinctive nature for chasing and herding, whether it’s other animals or people. This could present a problem with small children.

They are naturally aggressive, bold-natured, work-oriented dogs that require lots of exercise and room to grow. Heeler pups do well with owners who love the great outdoors and can keep up with their pet’s high energy level. As puppies, they can be trained to perform certain jobs or assume certain responsibilities, to keep them out of trouble. When bored, these pups can get into quite a bit of mischief very quickly.

Training

Blue Heelers are known for their courage, protective instincts and alertness, which make them good watch dogs for your property. By nature, they are quite dominant creatures, but you can train your puppy to be sociable with other animals and pets. Heelers are often suspicious of strangers, which can be to your advantage when training your pup to guard your property.

You’ll find your Heeler pup quite smart and capable of learning; however, his dominant nature may present a problem in accepting you as the leader. It’s best to start teaching your pup obedience early on to avoid “power struggles” when he is older. Even then, you may face challenges from time to time in the future. The more physical and mental stimulation you can provide for your pet, the more willing he’ll be to follow where you lead.

If you’re looking for just the right pet to share an active, open-air lifestyle, a Blue Heeler pup may very well fit the bill. Your pup’s love for life and the great outdoors makes him a suitable choice to meet your companionship needs.
