Bichon Frize Breed Overview

For the individual or family that are true pet lovers and have a great deal of time and patience, the Bichon Frize could be a perfect fit. This breed requires a great deal of time and attention, but the investment in those areas should prove well worth it.

The Bichon falls into the “Non-Sporting” breed category, but don’t be fooled by this categorization of this breed. This dog is extremely active, though not considered hyper. It loves to play and run. Although it is ideal for apartment dwellers, it loves to run free in a fenced yard.

This breed is small in size, getting up to 9.5 – 11.5 pounds. They are mild mannered and get along well with other animals. This doesn’t necessary mean that it would be a good idea to go out and buy a Burmese python.

Originating in the 13th Century, being the favorite pet of Royalty, the regality of this animal has been passed down the generational line. This also makes them great show dogs.

These animals can be characterized as lively, animated, versatile, and intelligent. Although they are intelligent they can be somewhat difficult to house train. The male seems to be a little easier to house train than the female. Cage training seems to work best.

The Bichon is a breed that requires a great deal of attention and does not like being left alone for prolonged periods of time. They are prone to separation anxiety. They love to participate in family activities and are highly interactive. So get used to them being in the mix of the things.

Because their coats are easily matted, they require daily brushing and professional grooming at least every four weeks. They are also prone to allergies, skin problems, ear infections, and deafness. They are also sensitive to flee bites, so it is extremely important for them to be treated for flees and parasites on a regularly scheduled basis.

Although the Bichon Frize is considered a high maintenance breed, it brings with the responsibility a lively interactive addition to any family. Whether you live in a small apartment space or a large home, this dog will adapt to the environment around it as long as the element of love and attentiveness is present.
