Why is the Beagle a Sought-After Hunting Dog?

The Hunting Dog

Most purebreds are known for the particular traits that they were bred for, with a wide variety of traits having been in the minds of breeders over the centuries. In some cases, they were seeking simple strength, speed, or intelligence – and certainly these are qualities that every dog-owner would seek in their canine companion, but in many cases, while these form the foundation of the breed they bred, they were also seeking more specific behaviors. For example, herding dogs instinctively herd other animals, from sheep to goats to even chickens, and defend that herd from predators, without having to be trained or told to. It’s incredible to think about how deeply these habits and instincts have been bred into the bones of these dogs, such as in the case of the Beagle and its propensity for hunting!

What Makes a Beagle So Great?

The Beagle is considered a prized hunting dog among those who prefer a canine companion in their hunting activities. They have a number of traits and qualities that make them ideal for the hunt, such as their knack for driving trails. It goes beyond a mere knack, however; the Beagle has large nostrils that are perfect for scenting, or sniffing out the scents of their prey. Indeed, when you see a Beagle, its nose is to the ground, sniffing for something interesting! Blame the breeders of the Beagle over the centuries for this instinctual behavior. The Beagle’s tendency to “bay,” or call out with a unique bark that can be heard from quite a distance in order to notify hunters that the quarry has been found, is also highly sought-after.

You Can’t Do Better Than a Beagle

Of course, it isn’t just these specific behaviors that recommend the Beagle to the hunter. Beagles are incredibly stubborn, determined, and willful when it comes to tracking game. They never give up, and that’s important in a hunting companion! Beagles also display a great amount of energy and vigor, which is great for a long hunt that can last all day; the Beagle will never give up! Finally, the Beagle is incredibly aware of its surroundings, and is great at both being aware of the quarry, but also at being aware of you and avoiding the danger that hunters sometimes represent, even if by accident. Really, if you’re looking for a perfect hunting dog, you couldn’t do better than a Beagle!
