Alaskan Malamute Puppies

If you’re considering a large-breed dog, Alaskan Malamutes are excellent for both families and active individuals. The puppies resemble small, curious wolves but they grow quickly; a full-grown malamute can reach 95 pounds. Alaskan Malamutes are friendly and loyal dogs, but they do have certain requirements for their happiness and health. Below are three factors to consider when getting your first “mal” puppy.

Space

Ideally, an Alaskan Malamute should have plenty of space indoors. They can become quite large, but fortunately, they are nimble and not particularly prone to chewing, so they make excellent house dogs. As puppies and as adults, the breed is built for hauling and endurance, so they will require a good bit of exercise. A fenced-in yard is helpful, but as very energetic dogs they present a risk for digging and escaping if left unattended. They should be exercised in a hands-on way, either through walk or play, for at least an hour daily.

Training

Alaskan Malamutes will be looking for a pack leader from an early age, so it’s important to show leadership. Many trainers and owners roll month-old puppies on their backs for belly rubs as a comfortable training and trust exercise. Though the puppy should not be allowed to roll over until the owner feels it has submitted, this is also an affectionate gesture. When discouraging snapping or “alpha” behavior, try a water bottle with scented water. Ultimately, confidence is the best way to show your puppy you are in charge and capable of caring for it.

Care and Grooming

Because they originated in the cold climate of Alaska, malamutes have a double coat for warmth. This doesn’t mean that they are unable to adjust to warm temperatures, however, they do best with consistent brushing. (That will also cut down on shedding around the house.) Bathe when necessary, especially after messy outdoor play.

This breed is exceptionally intelligent and kind, making it a good choice for first-time large dog owners. With the right amount of space and an appropriate training and care routine, these dogs will flourish in any home.
