You Know the Westminster Dog Show, But It’s NOT The World’s Largest

Crufts is known as the World’s Largest Dog Show according to the Guinness Book of World Records since 1991 for having over 30,000 dogs preform in their show. This dog show came from humble beginnings and has moved onto to be one of the most prestigious and fun-filled dog shows in the world.

History

Crufts dog show was originally created and hosted in London by Charles Croft, the founder of Cruft’s Dog Biscuits. It started with just over 2,000 dogs in the first year and quickly expanded to over 10,000 in the ongoing years. Crufts has always been filled with prestigious breeds and dog owners including Queen Victoria’s dogs.

In 1948 the UK Kennel Club had taken over Cruft’s Dog Show and the BBC began televising it.Since then the show has evolved in breeds shown, challenges, awards, and categories (including a shelter dog category).

Make Your Dog Show Ready

While some judges may not see the endless potential your dog holds, we know you see it and want to give you a few tips to help your dog show off.

Grooming

Grooming your dog regularly will help them stay healthy inside and out. Doing light brushings daily or weekly depending on your dog’s activity and breed will keep their hair shining and clean. You should also invest in monthly or quarterly, or semiannual professional groomings to keep your pooch’s coat healthy.

Training

Believe it or not, dogs do like to learn and will be more than happy to if they know that makes you happy. Send at least an hour a week going over commands with your pup to keep them sharp and well behaved. Be sure to encourage your pup with positive reinforcement. Use a calm, even and stern voice when giving commands and be sure to reward them be that with a game of fetch or pieces of kibble as they complete their tasks. Your dog will be jumping and running through agility courses like a pro.

Noms

Every dog needs a well balanced diet to maintain physical and mental health. The best thing you can do for your dog is to give them a healthy diet and take them to the vet regularly. They will end up feeling like a show dog and giving you the best reward of all, unconditional love.
