3 Tips For Training Your German Shepherd

The German Shepherd has been one of the most popular breeds in the world for years. From their distinct coloring to their loyal and playful attitude, German Shepherds embody what is so great about having a loving pet. Even though they can be the best of pets with little training, it will always behoove both owner and pet to instill a few learning techniques to make sure that their relationship is as good as possible. Listed below are 3 tips for training your German Shepherd.

Socialize your German Shepherd!

German Shepherds are not normally aggressive but if your pup is raised incorrectly they could become hyperactive and aggressive. By choosing to bring your German Shepherd to places such as puppy parks, play dates, and training sessions you can show them how to behave around both people and dog. Use these visits as a way to show your dog how to properly behave. You should reinforce good behavior with treats and ear scratches.

Become the ‘leader’!

Dogs used to be pack animals and because of this they will adhere to the ‘biggest’ and ‘baddest’ dog in the pack. As the owner of a German Shepherd it is your job to become the pack leader but you should do it by being in control, not being mean. Create a training regiment that involves teaching your Shepherd different commands such as: sit, stay, lay down. When your Shepherd follows these commands you should then reward them. You should become the alpha-dog through love, not violence and the use of harsh voices. If you find that your Shepherd is acting up and not respecting you then you should implement crating as a form of punishment. Crating your pup for 15 minutes or so at a time is a harmless way to instill respect.

Keep training!

Much like a child in school, the moment you decide to let up on your training the dog will begin to forget everything it ever learned. So when you begin to train your German Shepherd, at about 8 weeks in, never let up! Keep teaching the dog new tricks and keep rewarding them for adherence to old commands. A consistent work ethic helps both owner and pup!
