Uses of Service Dogs

Service dogs or guide dogs are often trained to help the blind and deaf get through daily activities. They often are trained to help autistic or developmentally disabled individuals with everyday tasks and provide comfort and companionship at the same time. Some are used to help those with serious physical and mental illnesses.

The three top breeds for service dogs are Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers. One reason is that anyone that needs assistance needs a dog that is medium to large. These dogs are large and generally have a good temperament. The dogs should be able to bring something to the person or push and pull him if needed. These dogs have short fur so grooming is not labor intensive. Most agencies train the dogs then match them with the individual.

Top Three Service Dogs

Gold Retrievers are used because they are gentle and often friendly to everyone. When a person is walking with them they are not a threat to others. They are easy to train another important character in a service dog. Because they are calms they do not get agitated easily and start barking or nipping. They are active and require exercise and grooming which could be a problem for some clients.They provide great companionship and service.

German Shepherds are loyal and protective of the home and family. They must be trained to avoid over protectiveness. They sometimes are suspicious of strangers and are used as police and seeing eye dogs. They need daily grooming and regular exercise so this is another consideration. They may not be ideal for a disabled man or women that is not mobile.

Labradors are very friendly and easily trained to help others. They are very dependable which is an important trait in a service dog that helps people. They are calm natured so they do not easily get spooked or become agitated. They are often used for searches and rescues. They too need regular exercise and grooming.

Other breeds may be a better for fit for some clients with specific special needs. Today there is a wider variety of breeds trained to be service dogs, but these 3 are historically some of the best.
