Playful Boxer Puppies

The Boxer dog breed has its roots in Germany. Although boxer dogs often stand on their hind legs at bat at things, apparently boxing, this is not how they got their name. It is likely that the origin of the name comes from an old and forgotten German word associated with the breed.

The Boxer Breed

Since the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes Boxers as a distinct breed, they meet the standards of the AKC for the breed. When the pups reach adulthood the males are 23 to 25 inches at the withers, and females measure a bit smaller in the range of 21 ½ to 23 ½ inches. Bodies are square, sturdy, and have balanced musculature. Boxer colors are fawn and brindle. Markings are black or white. Since 2003, Boxers have been the seventh most popular pet dog breed in the United States.

Boxers are among the most popular pet dogs in the United States because of their friendliness. Although they are high energy dogs requiring a great deal of attention they are wonderful around children and a perfect family pet.

These dogs, with their funny, sad expressions are very bright and have near human personalities. They are very curious, but patience tempers that curiosity.

Boxers Must Receive Training

Since the Boxer breed is so high energy, training is necessary. Remember though, these dogs are smart and so they take to training well. The best way to train your Boxer puppy is using obedience reward training.

Wanting to please you is important to them. It is astonishing how quickly your puppy learns the basics of sit, come, fetch, down, and stay. But, training your puppy must include leash and walk training, otherwise these strong dogs will be walking you when they are adults. While training your puppy always stay call, if you are getting frustrated end the session. Yelling or punishing your dog is useless for training and may harm your dog’s desire to learn.

Although Boxers are family friendly and great with kids, they are sometimes shy around strangers. To prevent your dog from becoming aggressive with other dogs and people, it is a good idea to start socializing them early. Take them to the local dog parks, the local pet store, and family gatherings.

Remember, Boxers love attention so they do well in large groups. Play with your puppy daily and give them lots of attention – you will have a lifelong friend.
