We have had guard dogs for years. This breed is hands down the best over all dog. When we have lost one it's like losing our child. We love them.

Akita Breed Review by Aleasha
Akitas are wonderful dogs! They are large, rugged, powerful and look very similar to Gray Wolves. They have a thick coat that comes in many different colors and patterns. They carry themselves with a dignified, impressive appearance. They look imposing, so they make an effective deterrent to burglars. Akitas don\'t need a great deal of exercise. This breed doesn\'t bark much (they are the strong, silent type). They aren\'t clingy or overly-dependent and prefer to stand on their own four feet.

This breed isn\'t for everyone. It is important that you get a puppy and socialize him or her well. I have owned 2 Akitas. Currently my Male puppy is 7 months old and 80 pounds. He is a sweetheart, but he is VERY protective of my 2 boys ages 6 & 5. I think my dog thinks they are HIS children and not mine :) He will not let ANYONE (beside me and my husband) near them until he senses everything is ok. Even my friends that visit often aren\'t able to go near my kids until Burly checks things out. Burly even lovingly nipped me when I spanked my son, LOL! I LOVE THIS and that is why I have an Akita. I didn\'t have to teach him this, its a natural thing with the breed. He has to be with us always or he gets upset! He hates it outside when we are in the house. He likes to be with us. I am a stay at home mom and he gets a good deal of attention. He gets along with our 12 pound shitzu. She boss\'s my Akita around :) I handfed him at 8 weeks on, it helps with their food and water aggression. I recommend you do the same! Research the breed, not all AKitas are like my Burly :) GOOD LUCK

I owned an Akita loved this breed. Very loving to the family. However she didn\'t like outsiders. She also didn\'t get along with males for some reason. Also didn\'t get along with other animals. Very protective. Tho she never bit anyone or attacked anyone.. Just read up on this breed before you get one.. Oh and shedding is a lot to take care of 2x year.. It\'s like picking Cotten !!
