My Dog Is Vomiting!
If you own or ever have owned a dog, then have probably seen it vomit. Your dog vomiting can mean any number of things, some of which are minor, but it can also be caused by an underlying health concern. Some of the simple, less serious things that can cause a dog to vomit are eating spoiled food, over-eating, or eating too quickly. Maybe your dog is vomiting because they got something out of the garbage, or maybe they ate something indigestible, like the time my dog ate one of my children’s socks. Most times these causes (except for the sock) can avoid a vet visit, but you need to be careful that there isn’t something more serious going on. In some cases vomiting can mean something like cancer, kidney failure, ulcers, fungus, or any number of infectious diseases. Here are some tips to help you determine the severity of your dogs issue so you can make your own determination on whether a Vet trip is needed.
- Keep an eye on how your dog or puppy is acting. Are they playful and willing to accept food or treats after the vomiting occurence? If they are not, and they seem lethargic, then you may need the help of a vet. Keep in mind that even if the dog is playful, the symptoms could worsen over time.
- Analyze the possible causes for the illness that you can control. Did the dog dig in your trash can? Is there grass/plants present in the vomit? Dogs get ill all the time from eating grass or trash, if you can see that there are things like this in the vomit, it may be what caused the vomiting.
- Keep an Eye on your pets bowel movements. If the animal is experiencing abnormal bowel function(diarrhea), there may be a more serious digestive problem that needs addressed.
We are not Veterinarians, so what you do in the case your dog/puppy is sick is up to you. But if you can identify the problem as something temporary, it sure does help to save the Vet bill. We as humans sometimes eat or drink something that doesn’t agree with us and have to throw it up, dogs do the same thing. If you know your dog, you will know when it is time to get help because they won’t be acting like the dog you are used to.
