How Smart Is My Dog?
Everyone seems to have a different opinion on what breed of dog is the most intelligent. I have actually heard people argue about the subject, but the fact is that all breeds are trainable. But you also have to consider what you intend to do with the puppy you are looking to buy. Are you planning on entering them into Dog Shows? Or perhaps you want a top notch Hunting Dog? You wouldn’t want a poodle if you intend to use your new friend as a Bird Dog, would you? Certain breeds have gifts that other dogs don’t. Maybe it is a more keen sense of smell, or maybe it is being more capable around water. Whatever the case may be, we have a general idea, based on years of research, what dogs are deemed the most trainable and here are some facts about them. The dogs are listed starting with the “most intelligent”.
- Border Collie: Great for Agility Competition, talented working class Canine.
- Poodles: The Cream-of-the-Crop Show Dog. Plus you can give them weird haircuts, Score!
- German Shepherds: Long history as Police/Guard dogs.
- Golden Retrievers: Great for small game hunting, but loyal companions as well. Think “Homeward Bound”, and watch it if you haven’t already.
- Dobermans: Alot of people label these dogs as aggressive, not the case. The Doberman is a highly intelligent Watch Dog.
- Shetland Sheepdog: More commonly known as the Sheltie, has a strong Herding instinct.
- Labrador Retriever: Oh the intelligent yet stubborn Lab. This breed would be higher on the list if they weren’t so strong willed. But the bottom line is, they are one of the most loving and loyal breeds alive.
All of the above dogs I mentioned have the ability to understand numbers up to 5, and up to 150 total voice/hand commands. The level of training your dog will achieve is up to you first and foremost, Good Luck!
