Why does my dog chew on things?!
If you own a dog then you fully understand the fact that your puppy/dog is going to chew things, but keeping them from chewing up your $50 pair of shoes is very important. I ,for instance, have never owned a dog I didn’t have to discourage from chewing things they should not be chewing. Even though I take the behavior of my dog very seriously and like to think that I know alot about the training of puppies, my current animal will try to chew anything he can get his jaws on, so you are not alone. The worst part is, because he knows that I will be unhappy with him, he tries to do it when I am not around or cannot see him. I can leave my 21 month old dog alone for my entire work day, and when I come home nothing is destroyed. But let him get a used sock or a empty water bottle in his sights, and its game on.
Now you have to remember, puppies aren’t chewing because they are not loyal, angry, spiteful, or disrespectful. The reason a dog chews is anxiety, boredom, frustration or other things that aren’t related to you. You must make sure that your puppy/dog understands what is OK for them to chew on and not give them access to things that aren’t OK. Even with the proper training a dog will take advantage of a sock left on the floor, its just their nature. Punishing your dog is not the way to make him/her not chew thing they shouldn’t, keeping those this out of reach is.
Realizing that dog toys can become expensive, but so can your your dog chewing things they shouldn’t. Focus on getting your dog products like Kong and Nylabone brand toys. The Kong toys can usually have treats stuffed in them, and the Nylabone are tough as can be. If you buy a Kong toy that has the ability to put a treat inside, do it, it will entertain Fido for hours!
