Does my Dog have Anxiety?

Most people don’t realize how easily a dog can become anxious. Dogs are simple creatures that can become very uncomfortable with certain surroundings. As an example, I at one point owned a Rottweiler and a Min-Pin, and I noticed every day the similarities and differences between the two breeds. The Rotty was afraid of the sound of fireworks, while the Min-Pin would bark out the window at them. The Min-Pin didn’t like new people, while the Rotty would greet everyone with a ton of affection. One thing that is certain however, is that you can tell when a situation makes your dog anxious. Here are some of the tell tale signs to look for.

  • Nervous Peeing: My Rotty urinated on my kitchen floor on the 4th of July one year, she was very afraid of fireworks, even when she wasn’t near them. Some dogs that have been mistreated, or some that are just very timid, will pee when you approach them if they are uncomfortable.
  • Excessive Panting: If a dog is panting for a prolonged period, it can be a sign it is anxious, or in distress.
  • Biting/Snapping: Some dogs will react aggressively when they are uncomfortable. Often a attempted bite will be preceded by a snarl. Just be aware of a dogs posture at all times.
  • Trembling(smaller breeds): If a dog is shaking, it usually is because it is cold.
  • Pancaking: When a dog lays on its belly and approaches you or another animal, it is a nervous and submissive gesture.

It is sad to see an animal you love anxious, but there are things we can do to help comfort them. Obviously there are medications available if it becomes severe, but I recommend training. Try approaching things calmly with your animal, so it doesn’t get over-excited. And use a calm and soothing voice when greeting him/her. Be consistent and give your dog distractions(treats/toys) to help it focus on other things. Hope this helps if your dog has anxiety.
