July 31: National Mutt Day

Puppy! In 2005 Celebrity Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate, Colleen Paige created National Mutt Day for July 31 and December 2. National Mutt Day was created to raise awareness for the thousands of mixed breed puppies, adult, and senior dogs in shelters hoping for a forever home.

These mixed breed dogs or mutts are often just as healthy if not healthier than purebred dogs, have wonderful temperaments, and are just as intelligent as the purebreds. Purebred pups can also cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Some breeders are also not as reputable as others. Places called puppy mills will churn out “purebred” pups that may have health problems, are often abused or neglected, and can have terrible temperaments from their abuse.

If you are purchasing a pup from either a breeder or shelter be sure to research the breed and learn as much as you can as the specific pooch. This will make the adoption, training, and transitioning process easier and enjoyable. You will also want to research the breeder or shelter to be sure there is no history of abuse or neglect. That way you have the best chances of having a healthy and happy pup.

So if you have decided to adopt a dog from a shelter here are a few things you should consider before, during, and after adoption.

Puppy Proof Your Home

Once you have done the proper research on the breed, the shelter or breeder, and the specific pup you will want to make your home as safe and comfortable as possible for your new friend. If you are crate training be sure to make the crate comfortable and warm. Keep their food close to their crate or bed and then have puppy pads by the door just in case.

Training

You will want to start training as soon as possible. If you can begin training while they are still in the shelter or with the breeder. This way you can train with a professional trainer and get off to the right start. Once at home you should try to stay consistent with your training and return to professional trainer if necessary.

Get A Check-Up

Be sure to keep your pup up-to-date on their shots and annual check-ups. This will keep them healthy throughout their years and will save you money over time. You may also want to consider going to a veterinarian that will work with your trainer to find out the best food, exercise, and training for your dog.
