Basset Hounds: Gotta Love Them Ears
Basset hounds have been a popular dog throughout the world for families and individuals. They are sweet, loving, and incredibly intelligent. Originally trained to hunt small game, these lovable pooches are now found on farms helping around the barn or in suburban homes keeping the kids company. If you’re considering adopting a basset hound you should ponder a few facts that may help you make your decision.
Hard-Headed
Basset hounds, like other hounds, are not always willing to learn. They can be somewhat apathetic during training sessions and need encouragement. Be sure to always have kibble with you and make sure they do exactly what you want before giving them a piece. You will also want to consider crate training your pooch so you will be able to leave home with both you and your pet feeling safe and secure.
Hounds will also follow a scent to the ends of the earth if given the chance. While on a walk always have a good grip of the lease and be aware of your surroundings. While they may be adorable and stumpy, they are strong and can pull you down and run off when you’re still trying to figure out what just happened. You may also want to fence in your yard if you are able. This will make it easier for them to explore their home safely and you may give your arm a break from the leash.
Laid Back
These dogs are known to drool a lot and can be somewhat sloppy when they are having a sip of water. If you need to have a clean house you may want to look at another breed. If you do not mind a few spots on the couch, floor, stairs, and anywhere else the pooch goes you can have a drool rag ready with you and you and your hound will be comfortable and happy.
Basset hounds may also have a bit of a problem with gas. Because of their shape gas can build up in their body. If you don’t mind this dog’s informal tendencies you can always vacuum regularly which will help with fur as well as scent and by using baking soda on your rug and furniture 20 minutes before vacuuming you may find your house smells fresher than ever before.
Packs on The Pounds
If there is anything your basset hound will love (almost) as much as you, it is food. If you decide to adopt a basset hound always keep an eye on them while eating and make sure they only eat what is healthy for a pooch their weight and age. This way they will stay happy and healthy.
