Bulldog Puppies

Because of the large size of the head, most bulldogs are delivered by Caesarean. The best time to buy a puppy is between the seventh and ninth week of age. These dogs come in a variety of colors, including solid white, red, and brown. They can also be brindle, which is a combination of whites, browns, and tawny colors.

Bulldogs are intelligent and become sensitive to the tone of voice used. This actually can make training the dog easier. The breed has a reputation for sometimes being stubborn, and puppy-obedience class is recommended. Bulldogs tend to have a dominant personality and the owner must establish early on who is boss. This is best accomplished by using a firm yet gentle manner. Consistency is important when training a puppy.

Adult Bulldogs

An average adult bulldog weighs approximately 50 pounds. The short, smooth coat on a bulldog is fairly easy to care for. A bulldog should be brushed a few times a week. This will keep the dog’s coat healthy and shiny. The folds on the face need to be regularly cleaned with a damp cloth. These areas can become infected. Excessive bathing, however, is not recommended. The dog’s skin may dry out and become flaky. The average bulldog does shed, though usually not excessively.

Bulldogs are naturally protective of their family and home. They usually don’t bark excessively, but will alert the family if strangers are approaching. Bulldogs crave affection from their owners and don’t do well in homes where they are left alone for long periods of time. Sometimes chewing can become a problem if the dogs are not given enough attention. Despite their “stern” expression, most bulldogs are docile and have a mild temperament. These dogs are usually good pets for families with children.

Health Concerns

The average bulldog lives between 8 and 10 years. The breed has a tendency to gain extra weight and regular, moderate exercise is a necessity. Because of the dog’s unique facial features, bulldogs are prone to skin infections and breathing problems. Most bulldogs can’t swim and are sensitive to extreme temperatures. These dogs should not engage in extreme exercise or go for long walks in very hot or cold weather.
