How To Care For Your Maltese Puppy

Maltese puppies are among the cutest puppies, partially because they are so tiny. Maltese dogs are considered to be a toy dog breed. They do not get very big and have long, silky white hair. They are sometimes seen with a clip used to pull the hair back from their eyes. But, they are a beloved breed nonetheless, and in order to own a maltese puppy, you should understand some basic things about taking care of your puppy properly.

Vaccinations

Proper vaccinations are important for any puppy, including your new maltese puppy. Much like an infant, your puppy will receive a series of shots that will leave him vaccinated against potentially harmful and/or deadly canine diseases. A veterinarian can give more advice on things like when your puppy should begin his vaccination schedule and on when he can be exposed to other dogs. But, just to be sure, it is best to make sure that your dog has had at least one vaccination before you purchase him.

Teeth Cleaning

As with many other toy dog breeds, a maltese often experiences problems with healthy teeth. You can help prevent these problems by taking good care of your puppy’s teeth. Make sure they are cleaned regularly and allow your dog to chew on dental hygiene products designed for small dogs.

Ear Care

Puppy ears must be kept clear of things like dirt and mites. Also, keep your puppies ears free of any excess hair that might grow inside of them.

Face Staining

Maltese dogs often have problems with staining under their eyes and around their mouth. The reddish-brown stain color is caused by teardrops. While tearing is unavoidable, as all dogs do it, the staining can be minimized by taking your puppy to the vet whenever first sign of eye infections appear, such as green oozing. Also, keeping hair out of their eyes as much as possible will reduce the tearing.
