Is a Pug the Right Dog for Your Family?
When you are thinking about getting a puppy it is wise to find out about the different breeds before selecting. While each dog will have its own personality, generalizations can be made about breeds so that you have some idea what to expect from your dog. If you were to consider a pug, for instance, you should know about the general traits of a the breed before deciding it is right for you.
A Pug is a small dog with wrinkly skin, curly tail and a short snout. They tend to have a square, muscular build but can have weght problems if over fed or under exercised. The personality of a pug will tend to be stubborn but not aggresive, can be playful and tend to adopt their owners lifestyle, whether playful and energetic or calm and restful.
These traits lend themselves well to a family dog. The pug would enjoy playing with the children and with his solid build he would be up to the task. The size of the pug also would allow it to be happier in a home with little or no yard, as long as its owners were willing to see that it got the exercise needed to stay healthy.
A pug will also need some specialized care. You should be aware that due to a lack of a prominent bony ridge above the eyes, the pug’s eyes will be more susceptable to injury. Another issue to be aware of wiith a pug is the skin folds on the face and in the ears need to be cleaned to keeps your pug as healthy as possible. Accumulations of dirt and moisture in these areas can cause irritations and even infections.
In short, pugs can be wonderful family dogs. Like most breeds you need to make sure you have the time and energy for proper care and exercise of your dog. If you have no yard be sure to have a place to walk your pug that you will be willing and able to access any time your dog needs it. Most of all love your dog and it will love you right back.
