Labrador Retrievers come in three different flavors: black, chocolate and yellow. No matter what color your Lab’s fur is, there are several characteristics that come in all Labs. These attributes make the Lab one of the best dogs for any pet parent, no matter if you’re single, part of a couple, or have a large family with lots of children. Labs have some distint features, such as a beautiful, blocky head, and wide, webbed toes.

* Loyalty – Labs are loyal to a fault. They like to be part of a pack, and will defend the members of their pack with their last breath. This doesn’t make them vicious or mean – most Labs’ bark is worse than their bite. But a big scary dog barking at a strange, unknown person is usually enough to scare them away without the need for violence.

* Disposition – Labs have an inherently sweet disposition. All your Lab wants in this world is a kind pat on the head, some tummy scritches and some yummy treats. Labs are not amongst the breeds that have gotten bad reputations, so there is no stigma against them. And Labs love children – they are great snugglers and are even better than teddy bears for young children!

* Size – Labs are the perfect sized house dogs. They aren’t too big, or too small. Like in the “Three Little Bears,” Labs are just right! Labs are usually around 50 to 70 pounds, but can weigh up to 85 pounds. Smaller Labs can even be less than 40 pounds. No matter what your needs are, you can find a Lab that is just right for you.

Labs are best for active households – you won’t find your Lab laying in the window sunning himself like a cat very often. This breed was bred for hunting and fetching (hence the “Retriever” in the name), so he likes to stay busy! Your Lab will get bored very easily and needs lots of exercise to keep him at his best. At least one walk per day, and a large fenced-in yard are best for your Lab. Keep plenty of toys on hand, especially those toys that are interactive, such as toys that can be filled with treats for him to shake out and find. Labs like to direct walks, so get a no-pull harness so your dog doesn’t control you when it’s time for exercise.
